Steve obtained planning permission for dormer roof extensions and a roof terrace on his house, but the development that was carried out was a little larger that was approved by the council, who refused a retrospective planning application and threatened enforcement action.
We submitted an appeal against the council’s decision, arguing that the extensions were not much larger than approved and the roof terrace did not cause any overlooking of neighbours.
The appeal inspector accepted our arguments, agreeing that the extensions did not look out of place and that the roof terrace would not harm neighbours’ privacy as long as privacy screening was installed (something that was secured through a planning condition).
The London boroughs are very much against roof terraces in general, though outside space is so important these days, and sometimes the only way to get permission for them is to fight the decision at appeal.
