Councils can be very reluctant to grant planning permission for dormer roof extensions, even though they are now such a common feature of our urban environments.
In this case, the dormers that our client was proposing were certainly very large. We accepted that they would not normally be granted planning permission (they didn’t meet Redbridge’s local planning guidance), but the fact was that the council had allowed similar extensions on nearby houses.
The inspector agreed with us that an exception should be made on the basis that very similar extensions were visible on neighbouring houses – a strong precedent had been set.
